Hope Healthcare Services Shares Home Remedies For Toothache

AVON, Ind. — Hope Healthcare Services (HHS), an Avon, Ind.-based non-profit providing affordable yet quality healthcare services to people in need and those without health insurance, is reaching out to share home remedies for toothaches. HHS is committed to sharing any and all information available on remedies that can help eliminate the need to see a doctor. However, they clarify that patients should not hesitate to seek a consultation at their facility for more serious issues.

In order to give their community a permanent resource to refer to in times of need, HHS has published a new blog post on their website: "The Top Five Natural Remedies to Relieve a Toothache." In it, HHS acknowledges a toothache may sound relatively harmless, but anyone who has experienced the pain it causes will understand that even everyday activities can become much harder to fulfill. Toothaches may be caused by several factors, such as a broken tooth, gum irritation from food, tooth decay, and so on. However, HHS says the pain itself is caused by irritation of the nerve in the tooth’s root.

First and foremost, Hope Healthcare Services maintains prevention is always the best course of action, so brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly can help keep many of the problems that lead to toothaches at bay. It is also recommended people get their teeth cleaned every six months. (More information on HHS’ low-cost dental care services can be found on their website). However, there are certain actions an individual can take if they start to experience pain.

The first remedy HHS suggests is ice. Applying ice to the part of the jaw or mouth where the pain is sharpest can help numb it. If the pain is toward the front of the mouth, HHS recommends wrapping a piece of ice in a thin towel and applying it to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time. If the pain is toward the back of the mouth where the ice cannot penetrate in this fashion, it may be better to hold ice water in the mouth for several seconds. Notably, this will not fix the cause of the pain. It should only be intended for help with pain relief.

Hope Healthcare Services adds that tea bags may have a similar effect, and they can be used either warm or cold. If they are preferred warm, they should be soaked in boiling water and then allowed to come down to a reasonable (though still warm) temperature before being applied to the tooth. If preferred cold, the tea bag should be soaked and placed in the freezer for a few minutes prior to application.

The third remedy on HHS’ list is a saltwater rinse, which may be particularly helpful if the cause of the pain is inflammation in the gums. For instance, rinsing with such a solution can help dislodge any pieces of food that are stuck in between the teeth, thereby causing inflammation. As a natural disinfectant, saltwater can also help keep an infection at bay if the person should need professional dental care. HHS says one teaspoon of table salt should be mixed with eight ounces of warm water. This solution should be used to rinse and gargle in the same way a person would use mouthwash.

HHS offers at least two other home remedies in their blog post, which can be accessed for free through their official website. Hope Healthcare Services has more than 15 years of experience bringing low-cost, quality dental care to local communities as well, so those in need are advised to seek their help if home remedies are not enough. More information on this as well as the other healthcare services they provide can also be found on their website. Additionally, social media users are welcome to connect with HHS through Facebook.
